Following a randomised cross-over trial of the effect of a four-week 60 mmol/day potassium supplement versus placebo on blood pressure (BP), eight of the original 18 hypertensive subjects continued with a 48 mmol daily potassium supplement for four months. For these eight subjects 24-h potassium excretion during placebo, one month of 60 mmol and four months of 48 mmol daily potassium supplementation phases was 56 +/- 23, 102 +/- 28 and 90 +/- 35 mmol/24 hours, respectively, and mean 24-h BP following each phase was 160 +/- 16/89 +/- 11, 147 +/- 13/83 +/- 12 and 145 +/- 14/81+/- 9 mmHg respectively, a significant fall in mean 24-h SBP between four months of potassium supplement and placebo period of 15 +/- 13 mmHg (95% CI: 4, 26 mmHg, p = 0.02), although the fall in 24-h DBP was not significant (8 +/- 11 mmHg, 95% CI: 0, 17 mmHg, p = 0.08). Modest increases in dietary potassium intake could have significant effects on lowering BP in the large proportion of elderly subjects with hypertension.

RESULTS:
Follow up averaged 7.6 years, during which the 5754 men had 404 coronary events, 159 coronary deaths, and 383 deaths and the 5875 women 177, 47, and 208 respectively. The rankings for factors for the three end points were mainly similar in men and women, although hazard ratios were often higher in women. Classical risk factors ranked better for predicting coronary risk than newer ones. Yet strong prediction of coronary risk was no guarantee of significant prediction of all cause mortality. Findings included an anomalous coronary protective role for type A behaviour in women; raised plasma fibrinogen as a strong predictor of all end points; and an unexpectedly powerful protective relation of dietary potassium to all cause mortality.

RESULTS:
Among 593 ischemic and 125 hemorrhagic stroke cases, and 2397 controls, few subjects were hypokalemic: 3%, 6%, and 2%, respectively. Using the normal range of serum K(+) as a reference (3.5 to 5.0 mM/L), hypokalemia was associated with an elevated risk of ischemic (odds ratio [OR]: 2.04; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.14-3.64) and hemorrhagic stroke (OR: 3.29; 95% CI: 1.45-7.48) in adjusted analyses. Associations were not modified by diuretic use.
CONCLUSIONS:
In adults with treated hypertension, hypokalemia in the year before a stroke was associated with an increased risk of incident ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke independent of diuretic use when compared to normal serum K(+) levels.

Potassium supplementation reduces clinic and ambulatory blood pressure in elderly hypertensive patients.
Fotherby MD1, Potter JF.
Abstract
OBJECTIVES:
To determine the effects of potassium chloride 60 mmol/day supplementation on clinic and 24-h ambulatory blood pressure values in elderly untreated hypertensive patients.
DESIGN:
A double-blind randomized placebo-controlled crossover study lasting 8 weeks, following a 4-week run-in period.
SETTING:
Outpatient clinic in a district general hospital.
PATIENTS:
Eighteen untreated elderly hypertensive patients (mean age 75 years, range 66-79) with a systolic blood pressure of > or = 160 mmHg and/or a diastolic blood pressure of > or = 95 mmHg were recruited from the clinics of local general practitioners and from the current hospital outpatient department. Patients had not received any antihypertensive medication for at least 4 weeks before entry into the study.
INTERVENTIONS:
Before entry into the study, the daily dietary electrolyte intake of each individual was established and this was maintained during the run-in and intervention periods. Following a 4-week run-in period patients received potassium supplements or matching placebo, each for 4 weeks.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES:
The within-patient changes in clinic and 24-h ambulatory blood pressures at the end of each intervention period.
RESULTS:
After 4 weeks potassium supplementation compared with placebo there was a significant fall in supine clinic blood pressure, standing and 24-h ambulatory systolic blood pressure. There was no significant change in clinic standing diastolic blood pressure, 24-h ambulatory diastolic blood pressure or pulse rate. Plasma renin activity increased and body weight fell after potassium supplementation. Twenty-four-hour urinary potassium rose significantly, whereas urinary sodium excretion was unchanged.
CONCLUSIONS:
A 60-mmol daily supplement of potassium chloride reduces clinic and 24-h ambulatory blood pressure in elderly hypertensive patients.

Pięć bananów, tj. ok 500 g masy daje 150-175 mg Mg; natomiast K mamy ok. 3900-4300 mg, tj. prawie dzienna norma.

USDA 2015
Cytat:
570 Potassium. Potassium is the major intracellular cation and it plays critical roles in muscle function,
571 cardiac function, and regulation of blood pressure. Potassium adequacy is also critical for health, as
572 deficiency adversely affects numerous organ systems including the musculoskeletal, renal, and
573 cardiovascular systems. The primary biomarker to assess potassium intake is urinary potassium, and
574 these data are not available in the CDC biomarker dataset. The DGAC designated potassium as a
575 nutrient of public health concern due to its general under consumption relative to the AI across the
576 U.S. population and its association with hypertension and cardiovascular diseases, two common
577 adverse diet-related health outcomes in the United States (see Question 17on health conditions,
578 below). This conclusion concurs with the FDA’s review that designated potassium as a nutrient of
579 “public health significance”
in its recent review of evidence in publishing a Proposed Rule on the
580 Nutrition Facts label.29 Even though underconsumption was evident across the population (see
581 Question 1, above), there is a particular concern for middle-aged and older adults, who are at increased
582 risk for cardiovascular diseases (see Question 17). Fruits, vegetables, and legumes are all important
583 sources of potassium (Table D1.7).
Wg aktualnego raportu USDA potas pełni kluczową rolę ochronną w chorobach serca, nadciśnieniu itp. Więc jednak warzywa są niezbędne.
